Setup & driver support for the DeStatiX-A9

Everything you need to get the DeStatiX-A9 USB to RS232 adapter running on Windows, macOS or Linux — plus answers to the questions we hear most often.

Getting started

Three steps to a working COM port

No external power required — the adapter is fully USB bus-powered.

1

Install the FTDI VCP driver

Most Windows 11 systems install the driver automatically when the adapter is first plugged in. If not, download the FTDI Virtual COM Port (VCP) driver and run the installer before connecting the adapter. Pin-outs and full operating guidance are in the DeStatiX-A9 user manual.

Writing your own software against FTDI's API? You will also want the D2XX drivers. Note that D2XX does not create a COM port — install VCP as well if you need one.

2

Connect and confirm the port

Plug the USB Type-A connector into your computer and attach the DB9 connector to your serial device. Windows shows the adapter under Ports (COM & LPT) in Device Manager; macOS presents it as /dev/cu.usbserial-* and Linux as /dev/ttyUSB*.

3

Set your serial parameters

Configure the baud rate (300 bps – 921.6 Kbps), data bits (7 or 8), parity (None/Odd/Even/Mark/Space) and stop bits (1 or 2) to match the connected equipment. Watch the TXD and RXD LEDs to confirm two-way communication is flowing.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Still stuck? Reach out through the contact details below and we will help you directly.

Does the DeStatiX-A9 need an external power supply?

No. The adapter is USB bus-powered, drawing what it needs from the host USB port. That makes it easy to deploy in the field or on a crowded bench without extra cabling.

Why do none of the LEDs light up?

Check that the USB connection is seated firmly and that the driver installed correctly. There is no separate power LED: the adapter is USB bus-powered, and the DTR and RTS indicators flash briefly when it enumerates. Note that the GND indicator does not illuminate — it is provided for pin-out reference only.

Do I need a null modem cable or adapter?

That depends on the equipment. Devices wired as DTE generally connect straight through, while connecting two DTE devices together requires a null modem arrangement. The TXD/RXD LEDs are the quickest way to tell whether your wiring is letting data through.

Which operating systems are supported?

Windows 11, macOS 15 and Linux are all supported. Linux distributions typically include FTDI serial support in the kernel, so the adapter is recognised on connection.

Can I use several adapters on the same computer?

Yes. Each adapter is assigned its own COM port, so you can run multiple DeStatiX-A9 units side by side — which is why the 4-pack and 6-pack are popular for labs and production test rigs.

How much ESD protection does it provide?

The DeStatiX-A9 integrates protection rated to 8kV–15kV per IEC 61000-4-2, helping to shield connected equipment from electrostatic discharge, voltage spikes and electrical interference.

Drivers

FTDI publish the Virtual COM Port (VCP) drivers, which is the one you want — it is what creates the COM port.

Available for Windows, macOS and Linux. Developers using FTDI's API directly can add the D2XX drivers, which do not create a COM port.
